It’s Better Hearing and Speech Month! We thought it would be fun to take a look back at the start of BHSM and see how far we have come.
Better Hearing and Speech Month was founded in 1927 and was known then as National Hearing Week. In 1958, the name expanded to become Better Hearing and Speech Month. Each May, this annual campaign provides an opportunity to raise awareness about hearing and speech-related problems and to encourage people to get their hearing checked. It also provides our profession a dedicated month to educate those in our workplaces and communities about what a speech-language pathologist actually does!
BHSM will maintain its title this year, however, ASHA has made a statement that the organization plans to make an announcement regarding the future of the month’s name at some point later in the year. Stay tuned!!
ASHA chooses a theme for every BHSM, and this year, the theme is “Building a Strong Foundation.” You can visit ASHA’s dedicated BHSM webpage for resources and creative downloads such as social media templates, Zoom backgrounds, and customizable press releases.
